Frequently Asked Questions

This page should hopefully answer any questions or vague issues you may have concerning the program. Please read this question-and-answer listing thoroughly before submitting any new questions you may think you have, as it may be answered somewhere on this page. If, after this, you do have a new question, please submit it on the Feedback page.

Does TextTone make use of any proprietary HTML code to implement it's effects? If so, which browsers are compatible?

The program does not use any kind of proprietary or browser-specific code to create the colouring effects. What it does use are certain aspects of version 3.2 of the standard HTML specification. However, this is implemented by all the major (and minor) web browser software packages available today, so browser compatibility is a minor issue. The only forseeable problems that could arise are that certain first-generation browsers that implement older versions of the HTML specifications (such as Netscape v1.1) would not understand the generated code at all, and display just standard, unformatted text.

Does TextTone work under Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000 or XP?

Yes! The program is known to run on all these versions of Windows. If you do experience problems with any newer versions of Windows, please report them using the form on the Support page and they'll probably be looked into, time and resources permitting.

Can I use TextTone in chat rooms or with instant messaging? How about with AOL Instant Messenger, for example?

To be honest, I don't know, and have no intention of finding out. I don't (and never will) use any kind of proprietary chat program or network such as ICQ, AIM, MSN or Yahoo. If, however, the chat/messaging facilities in any of these programs supports pasting in HTML code from the clipboard to format your messages with, then I suppose the answer could be "Yes".

Are you sure I don't need to pay anything for TextTone? Is it really free?

Yes, it certainly is free of charge. This principle is known as 'freeware' (as opposed to 'shareware', which is a try-before-you-buy kind of system). However, freeware is not the same as 'public domain' - with freeware, the author still retains all rights to the software, such as copyright and distribution/licencing restrictions. For more information on what the licencing agreements are for TextTone, please see the Readme file.

Does the TextTone setup program have an uninstall feature?

Yes. You can fully uninstall TextTone from your system, from Control Panel's 'Add/Remove Programs' feature.

I only have a 16-colour capable display. Will the program still work?

Yes, although previews of finely colour-shaded text will not look quite right due to the display only being capable of 16 colours. The two screenshots below illustrate this more clearly:

256 Colour Example 16 Colour Example

As you can see, with the 256 colour screenshot, windows is able to display all the colours of the effect - and it fades from yellow to dark orange clearly - but with a 16 colour display, which is not capable of showing all the colours, the preview gets degraded to just yellow and orange.

However, even if your own display is only capable of 16 colours, this issue does not effect the end-resultant HTML, as the display of the text on a web page depends on the end-viewer's display capabilities.

I notice TextTone uses a setup package called Inno Setup - where can I get it?

Inno Setup is a solution for creating basic installations for both 16 and 32-bit Windows applications, created by Jordan Russell. It can be obtained from his web site at http://www.jrsoftware.org/. It is also free.
